Re: Out of Game Discussion

You can change your username once you have registered and logged in successfully to something more "in game" if you prefer.  Once you have done so, your login information will change accordingly as well.  You can also change the password (recommended) in your profile, which you were initially emailed.

Re: Out of Game Discussion

This game is essentially a role playing Exquisite Corpse in the form of correspondence between player characters and occasionally will include snippets or whole correspondence sent to non-player characters.  Props (both electronic and real) may be involved at some point.

The Setting:  Your PC can be located anywhere in the world, have any profession, be any gender/age/race/religion/educational background/etc.!  It's up to you.  Because of the open nature of this campaign world, some players may feel overwhelmed and not know what's expected of them - follow the example of the first piece of correspondence (by Dr. Bulet) in the game-play forum.  Bram Stoker's Dracula may be helpful to visualize what game play might read like.

There are few rules:

Please respect the other players - killing them off (that is, noting their demise) is impolite!  In any event, it will most likely be disputed or re-written as an illusion, hallucination, dream, or otherwise.  Things may not be what they seem to be spelled out as!  Generally, very large changes in theme/time/setting should be considered carefully due to the way they will impact the play/writing of others, but don't worry about it too much - everything is subject to revision in the mind and pens (keyboards?) of the readers.

Re: Out of Game Discussion

As the game is just beginning, I will summarize here Dr. Bulet's first post and some ideas for future correspondence -

Dr. Bulet describes in a letter (to his wife, lover, relative?) that he is about to depart for an island where he will be working as a primate research scientist.  There are a number of other characters referred to there that can be utilized in your own correspondence or that you may even choose to play yourself - among these are other scientists, the ferry captain, natives (who Dr. Bulet believes don't speak English), the shop owner, and missionaries.  There may be other inhabitants of the island that you will create and describe, and of course you are perfectly free to invent and utilize characters who may be some distance from the island, or even exist in another time or plane of existence - a distant colleague or employer, a friend or enemy, who knows...

There is no referee or game master here, and no dice to roll - the limit is only your imagination.

Because there is no regular post schedule required or desired here, you may wish to subscribe to the two De Profundis threads in order to be notified by email when there's been an update.

Re: Out of Game Discussion

Just a quick note that there is a place  in your Profile settings under "Personality" to upload an avatar or image for your character if you'd like.

Re: Out of Game Discussion

Hey--
If we wish to reply to a "main character's" correspondence by assuming the character of the minor character, may we do so? And, if so, how do we create the identity?

Strangely enough, it's very easy to do this, just go into your Profile and change your user name.  Then your next post will be with that username.   The User ID is recorded separately in the database if I remember correctly and your IP is recorded everytime you post something, so abuse potential is limited.  There's no way to create a wholly separate identity per se, although of course if you prefer you could just register another account - the only problems with that are that you'd need to do so with a different email address, and then be careful with your login and password cookies in your browser (maybe just not have the browser remember them for the site).  Although if you did want to use the latter method for whatever reason, it's fine to use the same password between different accounts to somewhat simplify things. Hope that answers your question, let me know if I wasn't clear here...  - Rob

edit just to add: I think the only reason to create a separate account for this would be if you wanted to lock ownership of that username so that nobody else could post under it.  Not likely to be much of a problem here though.

Oops!  My bad, there isn't a way to change your user name on the fly so to speak, as I previously wrote in this forum.   Apparently that's only an option for Admins, which makes more sense.

Anyhow, if you'd like me to change your user name, let me know and it shall be so.

To play as additional characters, it looks like you'd need a second email to use with a different user name.  :-(
At least they're not hard to come by these days...

Re: Out of Game Discussion

It's all good. I'm not sure if you wanted to set the game in the South Pacific, it can of course be an alternate reality South Pacific.

Re: Out of Game Discussion

It might be easier to read your posts with your "in game" user name - mind if I change it to Micky Mac?

I was having the same trouble--not being able to change my user name. I'll use a second email address.

Re: Out of Game Discussion

Sorry for my confusion here folks - ccreel67, your username has been changed now to Mickey McLeroy, this will be your new login name to use with your password.  Again, anyone can feel free to create a second (or third) account here, but you'll need another email address for registration purposes.

re: "Camille"  - My actual wife's name is Camille!  lol - so weird to read a letter like that, that wasn't actually from her but still to "me".  hehe
that's what I get for using her name in Zach Bulet's original post!

Re: Out of Game Discussion

@bulette: Hopefully this will not be an issue. As we are told, De Profundis "should be read and interpreted only as a game. Under no circumstances should it be treated as a way of living." We may have already crossed that boundary...ha ha ha.

Re: Out of Game Discussion

Ok, this whole endeavor gassed out pretty quickly.  Perhaps there needed to be more than just "post whenever you want" as a stipulation...

I HAD to change the user name of "Camille" to "Nicole"... sorry, just too freaky for me!  Just thought I'd throw it out there in case we ever start to pick this up again.
